About National Fettuccine Alfredo Day

When is National Fettuccine Alfredo Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 7

Today is a great food holiday that we can all enjoy. It is National Fettuccine Alfredo Day, a February 7 holiday. Fettuccine Alfredo is a delicious, yet simple-to-make Italian pasta meal. And, it is inexpensive, helping you to stretch your food budget. Whether you are staying home for dinner tonight, or going out to a restaurant, choose Fettuccine Alfredo. Oh, and don’t forget the salad and garlic bread. They pair perfectly with this meal.

Traditional Fettuccine Alfredo has only four ingredients. They are Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, butter, fettuccini, and salt. Note, if you are on a low-salt diet, eliminate all or most of the salt in the menu. Then, add some Italian seasonings to enhance the flavor. And, there is nothing wrong with adding a few other herbs, meats, or other ingredients to the basic recipe. As long as you use fettuccine noodles and alfredo sauce, you are properly celebrating this holiday.

Did You Know? In Italy, Fettuccine Alfredo is served as an appetizer. In the United States, it is a main course item.

About Fettuccine Noodles

In the 14th Century during the Renaissance, Fettuccine noodles were first created in Florence, Italy. It took another 1,500 years before chefs paired the noodles with Alfredo sauce into a delicious meal. Depending upon who you ask, there are as few as 50 or so types of pasta. Or, there are as many as 300 – 350 types. This includes a wide variety of shapes, colors, and ingredients. Fettuccine is a wide, flat noodle. It allows Alfredo sauce and other sauces to cling to it. The name means “small ribbons”. You don’t need a pasta machine to make it. Just roll out pasta dough into a sheet. Then, cut ribbons of fettuccine by hand.

Fettuccine is often compared to linguine, which is a very similar pasta. Both are a wider pasta noodle. Fettuccine is a little wider than Linguine. And, it is flat. Linguine is a flat noodle that is slightly rounded at the edges.

While the basic recipe calls for fettuccine pasta, you can use any other pasta. However, to stay true to the spirit of this holiday, you must have fettuccine noodles today. From a health perspective, there are gluten-free and carb-free (or low-carb) varieties. That means you can enjoy a great meal while following any dietary restrictions that you have.

The Invention of Fettuccini Alfredo

In 1908, Fettuccine Alfredo was invented in Rome, Italy. Alfredo DiLelio created it in his restaurant and gave it his first name. DiLelio was trying to find a good-tasting meal for his pregnant wife who had lost her appetite. After eating the Fettuccine Alfredo, his wife’s appetite returned. She delivered a healthy baby boy a few weeks later on January 26, 1908. They named him Armando. DiLelio then added this meal to his restaurant’s menu.

Then, in 1927 Hollywood silent movie stars Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford were on their honeymoon in Rome. By chance, they ate at Alfredo DiLelio’s restaurant and ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo. They loved it. So, the newlywed couple brought the recipe back with them to America. And, the rest is history.

Open a jar of Alfredo sauce in America today, and you will find it is a somewhat different recipe. Today’s Alfredo sauce has cream in it. Garlic is another common ingredient added to the American version of Alfredo sauce.

Note: Online, there is some disagreement as to the invention date of Fettuccine Alfredo. Some references state 1908, while others claim 1914. During our research, we read a letter from the grandson of Alfredo di Lelio who states the date as 1908.

You can use a fork or as a finger food. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

Crispy tater tots are baked or fried to a crispy golden outside. Yet, they are soft on the inside. Both taste and texture make them one of the top ways to prepare potatoes. While you may love this starchy treat, it is not necessarily good for your health. A 3-ounce serving, approximately 7 tater tots, has 6 grams of fat, of which 1.5 grams is saturated fat. It is also high in calories, carbs, and sodium.

Did You Know? Tater Tots are a trademark of Ore-Ida. That’s why there are so many other names for this type of potato.

The Creation and Evolution of Tater Tots

People have included potatoes in their diets for thousands of years. They are native to North, Central, and South America.  Potatoes were first cultivated in ancient Peru around 5,000 – 7,000 years ago. It took several more millenniums before tater tots were invented.  As a matter of fact, they were first made in 1953 by Ore-Ida. Company founders F. Nephi Grigg, Golden Grigg, and Ross Erin Butler Sr. were trying to figure out what to do with leftover pieces of cut-up potatoes. Most of these pieces were leftover from the process of making French Fries. So, the creation of tater tots eliminated a whole lot of food waste and increased company profits.

Taters tots became an immediate hit. Usually fried or baked, ketchup is the favorite condiment for them. However, there is a wide range of sauces and dips that people serve alongside crispy tater tots. And, now they are an ingredient in countless recipes. In recent years, different ways of making and serving them have made their way to the appetizer section of restaurant menus.

  • Tater tots were invented in Ontario, Oregon by Ore-Ida in 1953. However, they did not hit the market until 1956.
  • Ore-Ida held a contest to name them. Clora Lay Orton, a young housewife, suggested the name.
  • Ore-Ida sells them in six varieties: Original, Onion, Mini, Extra Crispy, Extra Crispy Easy, and Crispy Crowns.
  • In 2016, Pizza Hut introduced a pie with a hash bite crust.

How did doctors come to the conclusion that exercise prolongs life, when the rabbit is always jumping but only lives for around two years, and the turtle that doesn’t exercise at all, lives over 200 years?

History and Origin of National Tater Tot Day

John-Bryan Hopkins, a food writer from Birmingham Alabama created National Tater Tot Day in 2009. Strangely, Hopkins did not publicize the fact that he created this holiday. Then, in 2012, a reporter for the Dallas Observer contacted Ore-Ida, one of the largest potato manufacturers. Ore-Ida informed the reporter that Hopkins created the holiday. And, the secret was out. We do not know why Hopkins originally failed to take credit as the creator of this important food holiday.  Also, we do not know why he created this day. It seems logical that he did so because he loves tater tots.

For example, themes include Star Wars and Strek, popular cartoon shows over the years, The Beatles and other popular bands, Godzilla, Jurassic Park, and many more subjects. We tried to compile a list of the top 10 themes of all time. We checked many sites and resources. However, there was little consensus of the Top 10 games.

  • In 1976, Roger Sharpe argued in a Manhattan court to overturn New York City’s ban on the machines. He argued they were more a game of skill than chance. He successfully demonstrated his case, and the ban was lifted.
  • By the 1980s, video games had largely replaced pinball machines in arcades and other venues.

About National Coffee Cake Day

When is National Coffee Cake Day? This holiday is always celebrated on April 7

Any time is a great time to bake one of your favorite recipes. Grab your apron and spatula. National Coffee Cake Day has arrived, and it’s destined to be a delicious food holiday. I can almost smell the cinnamon wafting from the kitchen. This April 7 holiday is a great opportunity for you to do a little baking. Then, take a break from your busy day. Coffee cakes are very popular around the world. You can enjoy it for breakfast, or any time of the day. It goes great with coffee. But, not all of us like coffee. It pairs well with tea or a glass of milk, too.

The History and Evolution of Coffee Cake

Cakes were first created by ancient Egyptians. It evolved from sweet bread recipes. From there different kinds of cake and recipes spread to Europe and eventually around the world.

Coffee was introduced to Europeans in the 16th century. There is disagreement as to exactly which century coffee cakes were first made. They were first made in Europe in the 16th or 17th century by confectioners and bakers as the perfect complement to a cup of coffee. It originated in Dresden, Germany. Early coffee cakes were also made near this same time in Denmark. There are varying recipes.

The European coffee cake is a coffee-flavored sponge cake. It consists of two circular layers of cake. After baking it in a bundt pan, the cake is cut in half horizontally to form two circles. The bottom layer is placed on a serving plate. A thick layer of coffee-flavored butter icing is spread on the first layer. Then, you add the second layer of sponge cake on top. Finally, you drizzle streusel on top of the cake. In the United States, a coffee cake is simpler. It has no coffee flavoring in it. It is a heavier, sweet cake topped with a crumbly mixture of cinnamon, sugar, and butter or margarine. In the U.S., it is baked in either a bundt pan or a square 9″ X 9″ pan, depending on how you want to cut and present it.

In both Europe and the United States, some recipes have slightly different base ingredients. And, often fruit or nuts are added.

National Bloody Mary Day

National Bloody Mary Day

About National Bloody Mary Day

When is National Bloody Mary Day? This holiday is always observed on January 1

Got a hangover on New Year’s morning? Are you ready to swear off drinking? Hold off a minute on that oath. You’re in good company. Now, all you need is a cure for the aftereffects of too much champagne. That’s exactly why National Bloody Mary Day exists. This January 1 holiday couldn’t occur at a better time. So, if you want to feel better quickly, as the saying goes “take a hair of the dog that bit you.”

This healthy drink cocktail helps to minimize the effects of too much alcohol. Amazingly, an alcoholic drink can remedy a hangover. Researchers will tell you that it only masks the effects of too much alcohol while your body recuperates.  Well, I don’t care about the research because I feel better already.

For the Diet Conscious: The average Bloody Mary drink contains 120 – 250 calories and 4.9 carbs. However, the numbers vary depending upon the size of the glass, the ingredients included, and the garnishes. For example: celery, olives, and shrimp each contain different amounts of calories and carbs.

How Did The Bloody Mary Drink Get Its Name?

There are many claims as to how the name came about. Here are some of them:

First, tomato juice is a deep red color, somewhat resembling blood. So, it seems reasonable and likely that most people believe the word “Bloody” in the name simply comes from this fact.

Many historians believe the drink was named after a woman in Chicago, Illinois, who worked at the Bucket of Blood saloon in the early 1900s.

In 1921, Fernand Petiot is credited with first creating the drink at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. Originally called Bucket of Blood, Petiot gave it the name “Bloody Mary” in the late 1930s.

Another theory is the drink was named after Queen Mary I of England (1516 – 1558), the only child of King Henry VIII. She was a bloody ruler. Referred to as “Bloody Mary”, she executed hundreds of people, primarily Protestants, for heresy. Here’s an interesting note: While the drink possibly bears her name, tomatoes were first introduced to Europe in the 1600s long after her death. Tomatoes are native to South America and were originally considered poisonous.

In the 1920s and 1930s, several others laid claim to creating the drink and giving it its name.

When is Tomatoes Galore Day? August 15 holidays.

The History of Bloody Mary Drinks

Here is a history of America’s favorite cocktail:

  • The first record of tomato juice being made was in 1917.  However, it likely existed long before this time.
  • In 1921, Fernand “Pete” Petiot concocted the first Bloody Mary while working at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris France.
  • The cocktail was not called “Bloody Mary ” until the late 1930s.
  • In the 1960s, bars began to add a celery stalk to the drink as a stir stick.
  • In 1976, McIlhenny Company added their Tabasco sauce to the ingredients of the recipe.
  • In 2018, the Plowman’s Association in Ontario, Canada made the world’s largest Bloody Mary. It was 155 gallons.

The Classic Bloody Mary Recipe

It’s hard to say with certainty the original Classic Bloody Mary recipe. Everyone who posts a “classic” recipe has slightly different recipe ingredients or amounts.

Here is our Classic Bloody Mary Recipe:

  • ice cubes
  • 8 ounces tomato juice
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 3-4 dashes Tabasco Sauce
  • 3-4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2-3 pinches celery salt
  • 2 pinches ground black pepper
  • 2 pinches garlic powder
  • 3-4 dashes lime juice
  • Lime wedges, celery stalks, and olives for garnish

Variations of Bloody Mary Drinks

Some people call the following drinks variations of the Bloody Mary. Technically, they are different drinks as they use different types of alcohol. Hence, they have different names.

Bloody Caesar – Clam juice is added to the ingredients. Or, Calmato is used. If you like clams, you’ll love this cocktail. The drink originated in Canada in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Bloody Maria – This drink uses tequila instead of vodka. Often, it is made with more or stronger hot pepper sauce. Sometimes, a Jalapeno is added as a garnish. This strong alcoholic beverage really has a kick.

Red Snapper – Gin is substituted for the vodka in this tasty cocktail. The other ingredients are the same. You can taste the difference as vodka is largely tasteless.

Virgin Mary – There is no alcohol in this cocktail. All of the other ingredients are included. It is a healthy non-alcoholic drink. Kids like it, too.

Ways to Participate in National Bloody Mary Day

Everyone can participate in National Bloody Mary Day. Even the kids. You can make Virgin Marys for kids and those who do not consume alcohol.

Here are some ways to enjoy this day:

  • Drink a Bloody Mary or two.
  • Alter the ingredients to create a different variation.

Bloody Mary Trivia

As you slowly recover from last night’s New Year festivities, sit back and enjoy this Bloody Mary trivia.

  • Move over Mimosa. The Bloody Mary is America’s favorite alcoholic breakfast cocktail.
  • Scientists tell us that Bloody Marys and other alcoholic drinks do not actually cure a hangover. But, they do make us temporarily feel better until the aftereffects wear off.
  • The drink should be stirred, not shaken. It does make a difference.
  • A “Snit” is three to five ounces of beer consumed after drinking a Bloody Mary.
  • Americans consume an average of 1.6 Bloody Marys per year. But, like any statistic, some people drink more, while some never touch it.
  • Thanks to the tomatoes, this drink is healthy for you. However, the non-alcoholic Virgin Mary is even healthier.
  • Tomatoes are native to South America.
  • Tomatoes contain Lycopene. This polyphenol helps to prevent prostate cancer.
  • Just about every ingredient in the drink is good for you.
  • Some researchers suggest drinking a single Bloody Mary a day can lead to a longer, healthier life. Sign me up!
  • Dieticians recommend 5 servings of vegetables per day. Tomato juice is a great start on this goal.

What do you really know about tomatoes? See Tomato Trivia.

Today's Quote

“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad. However, this fruit is great in cocktails.” – – Author Unknown

Thought for the Day: If tomatoes are technically a fruit, is ketchup a smoothie?

History and Origin of National Bloody Mary Day

We traced the creation of this holiday back to 2015. And, we certainly can speculate why this holiday was created. However, our research has not uncovered who the creator is. Perhaps, he or she had a few too many of these cocktails on New Year’s Day and simply forgot to document it.

There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a “National” day, which requires an act of Congress. and/or a presidential proclamation. We suspect that the government, along with the rest of the general population, was too hungover to address the issue of making this a national day.
