Have you ever been to a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, where there wasn’t plenty of leftovers? From turkey and stuffing, to mashed potatoes and squash, there’s plenty of food to store away in a safe manner. Like any other food, turkey, stuffing, and gravy need proper food handling to avoid food poisoning. With food safety in mind, here’s how to store leftover turkey and all of the fixings.
Here's How to Store Leftover Turkey and Fixings
- After removing your turkey from the oven, it should be refrigerated within two hours. Left at room temperature, harmful bacteria almost immediately begins to grow and multiply.
- Wrap up and refrigerate turkey, stuffing, gravy, and all other foods within this two-hour timeframe. If you are busy, you can wrap and refrigerate all the leftovers of each item. Later, you can separate it into amounts later for guests to take home, or for freezing.
- Remember to immediately remove the stuffing from the turkey.
- Leftovers kept in the refrigerator are good for:
- Turkey: 3-4 days
- Stuffing: 1-2 days
- Gravy: 1-2 days
- Turkey, stuffing, and gravy can be frozen for longer-term storage. To avoid freezer burn, wrap all foods tightly, or use airtight containers.
- It is recommended to store turkey leftovers in the freezer for up to one month.
