Irish Soda Bread Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

5 tablespoons sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

3 tablespoons butter, softened

1 cup buttermilk

2/3 cup raisins

How to Make Irish Soda Bread Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Spray an 8-inch-diameter cake pan with cooking oil spray.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, 4 tablespoons of sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  4. Add butter and mix together until coarse.
  5. In a second bowl, add buttermilk.
  6. Gradually stir dry ingredients into milk to blend.
  7. Mix in raisins.
  8. Shape the dough into a ball.
  9. Place dough onto the cake pan and flatten slightly. Do not bring the dough to the edges of the pan.
  10. Sprinkle dough with the remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.
  11. Bake the bread for 40 minutes, until brown. Use a toothpick to test for doneness.
  12. Cool bread in the pan for 10 minutes.
  13. Transfer to a wire rack.
  14. Serve warm or at room temperature with butter or margarine.
