World Poetry Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always March 21

Poetry makes the world go round, making it a much better place in which to live. Poetry is an extremely important and powerful art form. Humans have been writing poems for thousands of years. When we think about poetry, romance and love is what first comes to mind for most people. But, poetry is so much more. Poetry is a linguistic expression of just about anything: feelings, emotions, values, hopes, dreams, messages, and more. It addresses, war, peace, sickness, health, fear, happiness, anxiety, to name just a few. Yes, poems are written about any subject you can imagine.

UNESCO declared World Poetry Day at their 30th meeting in Paris in 1999. Their goal is to recognize uniqueness of poetry to capture the human spirit. According to their website the purpose of this day is to "support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.".

While we often think poems should rhyme, there are plenty that do not. There are over a dozen types of poems. The most well know are: Sonnet, Haiku, Limerick, Ballad, ode and free verse.

Are you ready to create your first poem, but don't know how to begin? We'll help you out. Begin with "Roses are red. Violets are blue........." The rest is up to you!

Famous U.S. Poets:

  • Emily Dickinson
  • Robert Frost
  • Edgar Alan Poe
  • Walt Whitman

How to Celebrate World Poetry Day:

  • Read poetry by yourself or to someone.
  • Join a poetry reading group.
  • Try your hand at writing poetry.
  • Introduce someone to poetry.

Origin of "World Poetry Day":

In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared World Poetry Day to be celebrated annually on March 21.

It has been celebrated in verse ever since.
